This has quickly become one of my favorite albums; it's got stylish arrangements and the compositions are all challenging and rewarding. Overall it's a very engaging album, and I enjoy every second of it.
Favorite track: Blather and Scheme.
This album was approached with Miles Davis and Teo Macero's work methods in mind: record a jam session based on simple ideas and then edit the recording into a form of a piece. So it was that five of us gathered one day and played through some pieces and I started a long, arduous one-man reconstruction of the jams. I liked it a lot, but it couldn't be done live the same way, and it went out unnoticed. Too bad.
Busman’s Holiday (16:25)
The Bishop (Phase 1) (2:01)
Band of the Writhing Son (9:01)
Blowhole (A Day in Congress) (9:50)
The Bishop (Phase 2) (2:24)
Blather and Scheme (8:55)
Smedley (5:48)
Thanks to:
Lorraine and Miles, of course!
The musicians who played on these tracks, and their willingness to go there.
Jake Smith, Alex Bimson, and Miles Hartl for putting up with the gas masks.
Bill Kelly and Ricardo Zayas for support above and beyond. Randy Bishop, for unexpected friendship and for maintaining the Rhodes all those years. And the musicians who keep me currently inspired in live performances: Andy Lalasis, Paula Johns, Al Slutsky, Brian Bortz, Vern Mobley, Bob Howell, Anwar Marshall, Mike Cemprola, George Torrella, Al Moretti, Glenn Ferricone, Grant MacAvoy, Bob Ferguson, Carl Cox, Jeffrey Smith, Sonny Troy, Barry Wahrhaftig, Phyllis Chapman, Laura Munich, Jim Stager, Dylan Taylor… there’s so many, you know who you are!

Dave Hartl is a life-long Philadelphian. He plays jazz, funk, classical, fusion, and more, using piano, organ, accordion,
synths, Chapman Stick, guitar, and bass. Current projects include the Ronstadt Revue, work with Paula Johns, the funkjazz group Musical Collusion (check out their page here on Bandcamp), and arranging and playing accordion with The Divine Hand Ensemble....more
Carl Cox and I decided to inject some funk and groove into the Philadelphia jazz scene. The whole album was first or second takes of tunes written by Carl and me, and the energy was through the roof. Dave Hartl
I play Roland V-Accordion with and write arrangements for this avant garde classical ensemble, led by a Thereminist. We play everything from Mozart to Zappa, and it’s beautiful stuff! Dave Hartl
